Atija Byers

I began my doula career to address and help eliminate the racial disparities African American women and other women of color face in the medical industry. I love supporting and educating mothers to inspire positive prenatal experiences and to better equip them for labor, delivery and postpartum.

Q & A

Please include a brief description of your understanding of the need to support Black mothers, particularly in the US, at this time.

As a dedicated birth worker (doula), my mission is to empower and provide exceptional care to expectant Black mothers during their transformative journey of childbirth. I am genuinely passionate about birth work and I deeply believe that every Black woman deserves respectful, nurturing and empowering support.

Who tends to be a good fit for you and the work you do? Who is not a good fit?

All mothers who want to be educated about and desire support throughout their pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum journey tend to be a good fit for me. I have not yet met a mother who was not a good fit.

Name at least three easy to apply/practical tips we can all use to take care of ourselves, based on the knowledge and wisdom you have gained throughout your career so far.

Three easy tips: •To hydrate and nourish, replace half of your water intake with the juicing of fruits. •The mind controls the body so thinking positively and speaking positively can change your life. •Enjoy or find joy in every experience in life because time can never be replaced.

Please use this space to include your own experience as a mother or the experience you have supporting a mother(s).

It brings me joy to support moms during such a special and intimate time. I love teaching and encouraging them and it’s absolutely beautiful seeing them grow more confident on their journey to childbirth.
